4 Reasons Furnaces Overheat in Alpharetta, GA

Your furnace needs to get warm to heat your Alpharetta, GA home in the winter, but it could get too hot at times. This can lead to potential safety concerns and problems with various components. Old age can take a toll and contribute to furnace overheating, as can lack of maintenance and problems with airflow and short cycling.

1. Old Age

Many furnaces can last between 15 to 20 years(or perhaps even longer!), especially if they’ve been properly maintained. If your furnace has been in operation for 15 years or more, its parts may have deteriorated. As a result, it may struggle to heat your home, in turn overheating.

2. Lack of Maintenance

Without regular maintenance, dirt, debris and soot can start to build up on various components of a furnace, including the burners, motor, limit switch and heat exchanger. This can cause problems with efficiency, and if the system has to work harder than usual, it could overheat.

3. Airflow Issues

Restricted airflow can cause a furnace to overheat since it will have to work harder in an attempt to circulate air. Closed or blocked vents could negatively affect airflow, and a dirty air filter can prevent air from flowing through your home freely as well. To prevent this from happening, check your vents to ensure they’re free of obstructions, and change your filter regularly.

4. Short Cycling

A broken thermostat, ignition or flame sensor, in addition to other faulty components, could cause your furnace to turn on and off frequently, otherwise known as short cycling. Short cycling can put a lot of wear and tear on your furnace’s blower motor, causing it to get too hot.

Time can take its toll on a furnace, especially if you don’t schedule preventive maintenance. In addition, restricted airflow and short cycling can cause a furnace to get too hot. If you’ve noticed overheating issues, contact Comfort Atlanta Heating & Air for furnace repair in Alpharetta, GA.
