Why Does My AC Make My House Hotter in Atlanta, GA?

When you turn on the AC in your Atlanta, GA, home and get warm air, it’s easy to suspect the worst. It might happen for multiple reasons, but only some will require costly repairs. Here are a few AC problems that cause your system to make your house hotter rather than cooler.

An Errant Thermostat Setting

If your AC isn’t producing cold air, the first thing to check is your thermostat settings. It’s easy to set your thermostat to heat without realizing it. In that case, switching the thermostat back to cool should solve your problem.

Low Refrigerant

The refrigerant in your AC allows the system to cool your home’s air. If that refrigerant runs low, your AC may blow warm air. To fix that, you will need an HVAC maintenance visit to recharge your system.

A Frozen Evaporator Coil

Your AC’s evaporator coil transfers heat from your home’s air to the refrigerant. Then, it collects moisture from the air. If that moisture freezes on the coil, your AC will blow warm air.

Low refrigerant may lead to a frozen evaporator coil. A dirty air filter can keep warm air from reaching the coil, causing freezing issues. Or, a blocked condensate drain can prevent water drainage and freeze your coil.

A Failed Capacitor

Your AC’s outdoor unit relies on a capacitor to give it an electrical boost while starting. If that capacitor fails, your outdoor unit can’t run. Since the outdoor unit expels heat from your home’s air, this would prevent your AC from working.

The good news is that an HVAC technician can replace a failed capacitor easily. If there’s no other damage, it’s also inexpensive.

If your AC is blowing warm air and you don’t know why, don’t keep using it. To prevent damage and get your AC running again, call Comfort Atlanta Heating & Air for an AC repair immediately.
